From October 2018, Alessandro Peiretti is a varnishing teacher at the Scuola Civica di Liuteria in Milan.
From the school website (in Italian):
The objectives of the [painting] course are the basic notions necessary for preparing the varnish and painting an arched instrument, arranging the wooden surfaces to apply the same and the methods used to roll it out. The materials for painting the violin will be illustrated: natural resins, solvents, natural dyes, safety rules for their use (safety data sheets), cleaning in the laboratory.
The problems will be dealt with in the following order: wood finishing methods, preparation of colored varnish, preparation of transparent varnish, finishing and varnishing of the maple surface, finishing and varnishing of the fir surface, materials for polishing the varnish and finally polishing of the same. During the first year the painting operations will be carried out on special maps of maple and fir, in the following years the students will apply the paint directly on the instruments they have built.
Pre-registration is open for the 2019-2020 training year. For more information visit the website of the violin making school.
